TEFL Certificate

Teaching English as a Foreign Language

Completion of the following coursework leads to a certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) from the Department of Linguistics at Ohio University.  This content is designed for individuals planning to teach English overseas.  Course content provides a foundation in the study and analysis of language components, learning theories, classroom methodologies, and lesson planning.  The final course in the sequence, a teaching practicum, pulls together the coursework into an application environment with trained supervisors directing teacher development.

Courses are offered regularly in an effort to allow for certificate completion in two academic years though this is not a requirement.  Students are permitted to take only a single course at a time though LING 1010/5010, the online grammar tutorial, may be taken concurrently with LING 3500/5500.

Note:

*Students must maintain a B- average (no less than a GPA of 2.6 in certificate classes), or higher, across courses in order to earn the TEFL Certificate.

*Any student, who has initiated coursework by Fall Semester 2013, or before, may be allowed to take LING 4800/5800 and LING 4920/5920 concurrently (in Spring 2014) if cleared by both the Practicum and Program Directors.
