OPIE and OHIO alumni offer advice for international students

During the 5th International Exhibition and Conference on Higher Education held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia this past April, OPIE Director Dr. Gerry Krzic had a chance to reconnect with OPIE and Ohio University alumni.

Several graduates of OHIO shared their professional successes, as well as offered advice to current students.

Dr. Jameel Alhumaid attended Ohio University from 1999 to 2006 and received his master’s degree in 2001 from the College of Fine Arts and PhD from the College of Education.  He currently holds the position of Professor at Al Jouf University, College of Education.  Dr. Alhumaid says that he has warm feelings of Athens, a town he describes as “lovely.”  He advises ESL students to “Keep practicing with people and don’t give up!”  Dr. Alhumaid fondly remembers Pita Pit and Donkey Coffee, where he says he wrote his dissertation.

Saleh Almekbel (’04), a second generation alumnus and a graduate from Athens High School, graduated from the Russ College of Engineering with his B.S. His father Abdullah Almekbel received his PhD in Math Education in 2001 from the Patton College of Education.

Saleh has many memories from his eight years in Athens.  “It’s my hometown, actually.  The community is friendly.  People were open-minded, and the Islamic Center was very helpful being there, bringing us together.”  Saleh advises students to join the community and not isolate themselves.  He says, once he made good friends in the community, he experienced much more.  Now Mr. Al Maabel works as a manager of a mobile broadband company, STC.

OPIE Director Dr. Krzic hopes to continue meeting with alumni at this annual global event.  If you plan to attend the 2015 IECHE Exhibition, please contact Dr. Krzic at krzic@ohio.edu.
