Placement, Courses, & Progression

Our programs are designed for international students who

•  need to improve their English skills before starting a degree program
•  just wish to improve their English proficiency

Students meet 8-20 hours a week to focus on:

•  Listening
•  Speaking
•  Grammar
•  Reading and Vocabulary
•  Writing

OPIE offers 5 levels of English study for undergraduates.  Click on the table below for more details.

After arrival to campus, most students are required to test.  To read more about testing in OPIE, click here. Based on your test scores and your student status (language study only, undergraduate, or graduate), you will be placed into the appropriate level and courses.  For detailed descriptions of our levels and courses, visit the Ohio University Undergraduate Catalog.

Undergraduate Placement/Duration Table

Note: Undergraduates who do not meet requirements to begin full-time academic study must take an Institutional TOEFL exam when they arrive.  Level and class placement will be based on the results of the institutional exam and the OPIE Composition Test.

Advancement in OPIE can be based on grades or test scores.  For more information, consult the flow chart below.
