Dr. Ziad Akir had never left his home country of Jordan before he came to OPIE in 1984 as an 18-year-old college student. After attending OPIE for one year, Dr. Akir continued his education at Ohio University, earning a B.Sc. Electrical Engineering & Computer Science (1987), a M.Sc. For Dr. Akir, “OPIE provided an initial transition period to get used to the educational system in the U.S.” The program helped him “get acquainted with the American culture and educational system.”
Dr. Akir is currently the Director of Online Education (E-Learning) at Washington State Community College in Marietta, Ohio, where he lives with his Indonesian wife whom he met while a student at Ohio University.
