I grew up in a provincial town called Horlivka in eastern Ukraine, close to Russia. I went to a lyceum and took advanced English classes, which was a great preparation for my college career. Fortunately, the best undergraduate education for me was right there in my hometown. Horlivka Insitute of Foreign Language was my alma mater. I got a Specialist degree in Education from the Institute, but I did not stop there. I won a scholarship from the US Department of State to study Education on an exchange program at Grand Valley State University, Allendale, MI in 2003-2004.
After coming back from the States, I graduated from the Institute with honors in 2006 and got a prestigious internship at the Parliament of Canada working as an assistant at one of the parliamentarian offices. The internship was sponsored by Ukrainian Canadians. After that in 2007, I got a job as a Communication Specialist, and later on PR Manager at UkraineInvest, a government-funded agency helping to attract foreign direct investments in Ukraine.
Working in PR was great, but I missed my life’s calling, being a teacher, so I went back to school to get my master’s in Linguistics from Ohio University in Athens, OH. I was presented with the Outstanding Teaching Assistant award for my teaching achievements at the Ohio Program of Intensive English (OPIE) and graduated from OU in 2011. I started with OPIE as an intern, but also have served as the writing lab coordinator for OPIE. As my third-year project, I am coordinating vocabulary in the program.
Outside of teaching ESL, my interests include cooking, biking, going to the gym, canoeing, socializing with friends, and watching my favorite TV shows.
